It’s Halloween and we can’t think of a better holiday to get creative with your baking. You can turn just about any recipe into a creepy, crawly and spooky treat for the entire family with just a few adjustments and a little creativity.
Here are a few ideas to inspire your Halloween cooking and baking… don’t be such a scaredy cat, get that apron on, and let’s go!
Rice Krispies Zombie Brains
We first spotted this idea on Twitter and thought it was so cool… and so simple! Rice Krispies squares are a really popular treat to make in America. They’re crunchy, gooey (thanks to all the melted marshmallows) and sweet. Kids love them! Instead of making them in the traditional square shape, why not get a bit messy and shape your Rice Krispies treats into small brains? The transformation is complete when you add a bit of red icing to the top to create a really creepy zombie brain… ready to eat!

Chocolate graveyard cake
This is an easy transformation to do, turning a regular chocolate cake into a creepy cemetery; this is the perfect centrepiece for your Halloween party! Bake your favourite chocolate tray cake and then prep enough chocolate frosting to cover the top and sides. Chocolate fingers work great as a fence going around the sides. For the tombstones, use your favourite biscuits, but don’t forget to write “RIP” on them with icing pens before you stick them into the cake. Use some crushed up Oreo cookies or cake cut-off crumbs to create a mound of soil in front of each grave and if you want to go the extra mile, grab some white sugar paste icing and make some skulls and bones to scatter around your cake.

Meatloaf monster feet
Here’s a great idea for dinner on Halloween, before the kids go out for some trick-or-treating: monster meatloaf! Follow your favourite recipe for meatloaf but when it comes to putting it into a tin, shape it into one or two feet (depending on how much mixture you have). Use pieces of onion or Brazil nuts for the toenails (gross!) and don’t forget to add a few rings of onion where the anklebones would be! Bake for 1 hour and squirt tomato ketchup on the top, to make it look like the foot was chopped off. Stick a knife in it and your monster feet-loaf is ready to be served!

Lady Finger breads
Kids love making bread. The best thing is, you don’t need many ingredients to make simple bread dough: 100g self-raising flour, 25g butter, 2 tbsp milk and a pinch of salt. First put the flour and salt into a bowl and add the knob of butter. Pinch the butter into the flour with your fingertips until it all disappears. Add the milk and, using a wooden spoon, mix until soft dough forms.
Once you make your dough, the fun begins! Shape your dough to look like sausages… or fingers! Use a fork or blunt knife to make some lines to look like knuckles and add an almond at one end for a fingernail. Pop your fingers into the oven at 180°C until golden brown. Once cooled, paint the almonds red using food colouring and your Lady Fingers will be ready to eat!
